The Story Behind Explorer's Rest

The Explorer’s Rest draws its character from our journeys across the globe; from the lush jungles of Papua New Guinea to the vast steppe plains of Madagascar and the icy expanses of the High Arctic. Each corner of the space reflects a sense of calm and discovery, inviting you to unwind, recharge, and embrace the moment.

As you read this, we are likely setting off on our next family adventure to Indonesia. While we are away, we are delighted to be sharing our home with fellow travellers, families and explorers. We hope that during your stay, Explorer's Rest becomes more than simply a place to sleep. We hope it becomes a comfortable base for making memories, enjoying time together and discovering everything Salisbury has to offer.

The house has been thoughtfully prepared so you can settle in quickly and feel at home from the moment you arrive. Whether you are visiting for work, a family gathering, sightseeing or a longer stay, consider this your invitation to unpack, relax and enjoy Explorer's Rest as we continue our own journey on the other side of the world.

The Local Area

Explorer's Rest is located on St Mark's Road, one of Salisbury's most attractive residential streets. Lined with mature trees and handsome period homes, it offers a peaceful setting while remaining just a short walk from the heart of the city. One of our favourite ways into town is through the nearby green spaces which provide a scenic route to Salisbury's shops, cafés, restaurants and historic attractions. The city centre is around 10 minutes away on foot, making it easy to explore without needing the car. For a welcoming pub experience, The Five Bells is just an 8-minute walk from the house and is a popular spot for a relaxed drink. A Tesco Express is around a 12-minute walk away for groceries and everyday essentials, while Salisbury railway station can be reached in approximately 25 minutes on foot. Salisbury Cathedral, the market square, independent boutiques, theatres and museums are all within easy reach, while the surrounding Wiltshire countryside offers countless opportunities for walking and day trips. There are walks along the 5 rivers which flow through Salisbury easily accessible from the property. An OS map is provided to give you inspiration! Old Sarum, an Iron Age Hill fortress, then Roman Fort, then original Cathedral is a beautiful 45 minute walk from the property. All of the local restaurants are a short walk away. We have collaborated with local restaurants to offer you discounts for a range of cuisines - codes are shared in our digital guidebook :) Our top recommendations: 1. Five Bells Pub - superb wine, really welcoming to families during the day (usually super quiet) - with an incredible playground and park at the end of the road 2. Ride Coffee for the best coffee in town! 3. Artisan Wine Shop (you can feel a theme here!) for some superb wines and spirits - with tables to ‘drink in' 4. Mountain Springs Japanese Restaurant - absolutely superb and the owners are wonderful! 5. If happy to drive - The Pembroke Arms in Wilton is an incredible place for Sunday lunch 6. Kids entertainment - Airplane Museum at Old Sarum; Old Sarum Hill Fort, Wilton House in the summer, Churchill Gardens Skatepark (with a coffee wagon on a weekend) and a wander around the Cathedral and Cathedral Close. Laverstock Community Farm is a 10-minute walk with great walks and cafe. It is easy to explore Salisbury on foot from St Mark's Road. The train station is a 25 minute walk away, which offers frequent links to London, Exeter, Bath, Bristol, Southampton, Portsmouth and more!
